One Biblical Definition of Nobility

We’ve all seen the acts of courage in the movies of the noble man or woman who has an uprightness of character that is honored and respected.  Deep down I think most of us would aim to be noble; to act with integrity and conviction.  At the same time, now days nobility is rare. It is even more rare when the uprightness of character is not honored by mainstream culture.  There is a biblical example of nobility that will probably be dismissed or ignored by most.  But isn’t that the when nobility is really put to the test?  When almost no one gives credit where credit is due?

We find a biblical example of nobility in Acts 17.  Paul is preaching the gospel of Jesus to the Jews in Thessalonica and then he moves on to Berea.  He finds in Berea a nobility;  an uprightness of character in the Bereans.

Acts 17:11

Now these Jews were more noble than those in Thessalonica; they received the word with all eagerness, exampling the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.

Luke, the writer of Acts, gives 2 things that were true of the noble Bereans.  They received the word with eagerness and examined the Scriptures to see if what was being said is true.  This definition of nobility will not sell movies, but it landed the Bereans in the bible.  As millions and millions of Christians have read this story and aimed to be noble as they were, they are honored just the same.
