That Was Easy

That Was Easy

[Act 15:25 ESV] 25 it has seemed good to us, having come to one accord, to choose men and send them to you with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, [emphasis mine]

I read Acts 15 the other day and verse 25 hit me – particularly when it says, “having come to one accord”.  That phrase means that they were all of the same mind and all on board with the same idea.  If I hadn’t been familiar with the first part of the chapter it would have almost sounded easy – as if a group of people did some praying and brainstorming and the lightbulbs on top of everyone’s heads all went off so that the room was glowing with synergy and all of them knew at the exact same moment exactly what should be done.

But this wasn’t exactly how the first part of the chapter went and coming to “one accord” wasn’t and isn’t always easy.

The chapter starts with dissension.  Verse 1 shows us the issue.  Some guys who came from Judea started teaching that people had to obey the law of Moses in order to ... Continue Reading.

God’s Not Done

God's Not Done

If we are honest with ourselves, we all have areas where we want to see change.

Fill in this blank.  I want to be more ______ (patient, kind, bold, loving, compassionate…) or a better _______ (husband, father, wife, worker….)

Will I ever get there? How do I get there?  Where will the change come from? Do these questions sound familiar?  They do if you are anything like me.

If you are like me and you want to see change, here are 2 truths found in God’s Word that should encourage:

God Is Love, Love Hopes All Things

1 John 4:8 God is love.

1 Corinthians 13:7 7 Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

We cannot say that “God hopes all things” (1 Cor 13:7) in the same way that we would hope about future events.  After all, He knows the future as well as the past.  But, God is a loving Father that “pulls for” his children just like a good human father wants to see his children thrive and advance in ... 2 Threatening Attitudes to Partnership

2 Threatening Attitudes to Partnership

Partnership is something that has to be cultivated.  It doesn’t happen automatically.  Cultivating partnership takes teaching, commitment, and much like cultivating a garden, sometimes takes pulling weeds.  By weeds, I mean those bad attitudes that can crop up in our hearts.  Bad attitudes have the ability to choke the life right out of partnership and 1Corinthians 12 mentions two of these attitudes that need to be pulled.

Threatening Attitude 1: “I don’t have anything useful to offer the body”

Christ gives different gifts to different believers according to His will for the good of the entire body.  In fact one of the blessings that comes from being part of the body of Christ is the unity and fellowship that can happen within a group of very different people.  But differences of gifts and talents can also cause insecurity to rear up so that people doubt their usefulness when they compare themselves to others.  Some people, when they look at themselves, only see the things that they AREN’T.  “I don’t play an instrument”, “I’m not good at speaking in public”, “I ... Fasting- What is it?

Fasting- What is it?

During the month of February, we are calling the church to fast one day a week for the month of February.  As we have done the last few years, we are calling the church to fast for 4 Wednesdays in the month of February starting February 5th.   Many people have never heard of the idea of fasting much less taken part.  With that said, here is some background on what fasting is and how it can be used to draw closer to God:

Fasting- What is It?

Fasting is the abstaining of some good thing (most often food and/or drink) for a time period in order to devote oneself to God.  Fasting is often combined with times of prayer as a way to devote oneself to God.

Fasting – In the Bible In the Old Testament, fasting was often done as a group of people realized they needed to seek God’s will for their life or the lives of their community.  Since most of the Old Testament centers around the relationship of the nation of Israel and God, ... Continue Reading.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year

[Phl 3:8-14 ESV] 8 Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God that depends on faith– 10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained this or am already perfect, but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. 13 Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, 14 I press on toward the goal ... Continue Reading.

Read the Word!

Read the Word!

Jesus once said “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.”- Matthew 4:4

Just as not eating bread (food) will cause our physical bodies to waste away, not hearing the Word of God will cause us to starve spiritually.  We need to be hearing from the God who has created us.

How do we hear from God?

The most common way we can day-in and day-out hear from God is by reading the Bible, God’s written Word.  Even Jesus, God Himself, was a man of written Word.  The verse I quoted earlier was actually Jesus quoting Old Testament Scripture to answer the devil’s temptation in the wilderness.  The devil found an opportunity to tempt Jesus to turn stones in bread since the devil knew Jesus was fasting (not eating for spiritual reasons) and was hungry.  Jesus relied on the truth found in the Scripture to fight off sin (following the devil’s command) and know His Father’s will.

If Jesus leaned on the Word and was God….how much more for us!

I’d ... Continue Reading.
